How this calculator works

Every plan Shopify sells has a public monthly price. What the pricing page doesn’t show clearly is the transaction economics underneath — the payment card rate, the extra fee for using a third-party gateway, and the point at which Shopify Plus starts paying for itself in saved fees before you even count the Plus-only features.

This calculator pulls the published rates from Shopify’s own pricing page and applies them to your monthly GMV + order count. Numbers are directional — Plus card rates in particular are negotiated per contract, so the Plus row uses a conservative estimate. Get the actual number in writing before you sign anything.

The card rate math nobody explains

Shopify Payments card rates vary by plan. As of 2026:

  • Basic: 2.9% + 30¢ per online transaction
  • Grow: 2.7% + 30¢ per online transaction
  • Advanced: 2.5% + 30¢ per online transaction
  • Plus: negotiated (typically below Advanced)

A brand doing $2M/year on Advanced with Shopify Payments pays roughly $50,000-$60,000/year in card processing. Move to Plus and that number typically drops $6K-$10K. That’s the payment-side saving before you touch the feature differences. Full breakdown is in the Is Shopify Plus Worth It playbook.

The third-party gateway penalty

If you don’t use Shopify Payments and instead run Stripe, Braintree, PayPal Advanced, etc., Shopify charges an extra transaction fee per order on top of what your gateway charges:

  • Basic: 2.0% per transaction
  • Grow: 1.0% per transaction
  • Advanced: 0.5% per transaction
  • Plus: typically 0.15%-0.20% per transaction

This penalty is the single biggest reason merchants move to Shopify Payments where their region supports it. On $2M/year with a third-party gateway you’re paying an extra $10K/year on Advanced that vanishes if you switch to Shopify Payments — before any plan upgrade.

When Plus starts paying for itself

The rule of thumb across the Plus builds I’ve shipped: Plus pays for itself in saved transaction fees alone somewhere between $2M and $4M annual GMV, depending on your gateway setup. Below $2M ARR, the fee savings usually don’t cover the $23K annual Plus premium unless you also need B2B on Shopify, checkout customization beyond Advanced, or API rate limits that only Plus provides.

The full four-threshold framework (revenue, API, B2B, checkout) is in the Plus worth-it playbook. If you want a specialist to actually run these numbers against your specific stack and give a straight answer, book a Plus scoping call.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Shopify pricing numbers current?

Yes as of 2026. Card rates and monthly plan fees are pulled from shopify.com/pricing and updated whenever Shopify changes them. Plus card rates are negotiated so the Plus row uses a conservative estimate; verify your specific contract for exact numbers.

Why is my calculated cost different from what Shopify quoted me?

Three usual reasons: (1) currency conversion fees if you sell in currencies other than USD, (2) subscription apps ($100-$500/mo on typical mid-market stores), (3) chargeback fees. This tool shows Shopify’s core platform + payment cost only. Add your app stack and expected chargeback rate for full picture.

Does the Plus row include the Plus subscription discount at scale?

Above roughly $800K in monthly GMV, Plus converts from the flat $2,300/mo fee to a revenue-share model (0.35% on the 3-year contract, capped at $40K/month). The calculator uses the flat fee for simplicity. For merchants near or above the crossover, the Plus worth-it playbook walks through both models.

Does this account for Shopify Plus features I’m paying for?

No. This tool is transaction economics only — the pure cost math. The value of B2B on Shopify, Checkout Extensibility, higher API rate limits, expansion stores, and Shopify Flow is separate and merchant-specific. The 12 Plus features ranked by ROI article covers which features actually earn their keep.

Where does the tool store my data?

Nowhere. The calculator runs entirely in your browser as JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server. You can turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it’ll still work.
