Headless Shopify & Hydrogen Development — Honest Opinions Included
Headless Shopify storefronts on Hydrogen + Storefront API + Oxygen. Sub-second page loads, total design freedom, and a senior developer who will tell you honestly when headless ISN'T worth it (often) and when it IS (rarely — but valuable when right).
Sound familiar?
Your design needs more freedom than Liquid allows
Custom animations, React component libraries, app-like interactions — Liquid can do a lot, but at some point the developer hours required exceed what headless would cost.
Your storefront and your app share infrastructure
You're building a mobile app, kiosk, or in-store display from the same data source as your website. Headless Shopify (Storefront API) is built exactly for this.
Most 'headless Shopify' advice is sales pitch
Vercel, Hydrogen, Next.js — all great. But they add 3x dev time, ongoing hosting cost, and a steeper learning curve. Headless is the right choice for ~5% of stores.
Everything included
No hidden extras. No scope creep. Clear deliverables agreed upfront.
Shopify Hydrogen Build
Full Hydrogen storefront on Remix, hosted on Oxygen. Product, collection, cart, checkout (links to Shopify checkout) — all React-driven.
Storefront API Integration
GraphQL queries for products, variants, collections, customer accounts, cart. Optimised query batching to keep page loads fast.
Sub-Second Performance
Edge-rendered pages on Oxygen or your CDN of choice. PageSpeed 95+ on mobile achievable when headless is built right.
Hybrid Architecture
Headless for specific pages (e.g. interactive product configurator) while keeping the rest on OS 2.0 Liquid. Best of both worlds when full headless is overkill.
Custom Cart & Checkout Flow
Custom cart UI in React. Checkout still on Shopify (PCI / payment compliance reasons). Smooth handoff between the two.
Headless SEO Done Right
Dynamic meta tags, JSON-LD product schema, sitemap generation, server-side rendering. Headless storefronts that actually rank — not single-page-app SEO disasters.

Questions before you commit
Headless makes sense when you need sub-second performance at scale, deeply custom design that Liquid cannot achieve, or complex content requirements. It is not right for every store — I will tell you honestly on the discovery call if your current setup is good enough.
Not all apps support headless storefronts. Many apps inject scripts that rely on Liquid — these need headless-compatible alternatives. I audit your app stack early in the project and flag any that need replacing.
Hydrogen is Shopify's official React framework for headless storefronts. It is built on Remix, ships with all the Storefront API integrations pre-wired, and deploys to Shopify Oxygen — Shopify's own edge hosting. Using Hydrogen means faster builds, better long-term support, and no vendor lock-in outside of Shopify.
Oxygen is Shopify's edge hosting platform for Hydrogen storefronts. It deploys your storefront to 200+ locations globally so pages load from a server close to every visitor — no cold starts, no separate hosting bill, and it is included in Shopify Plus.
Yes — headless replaces the storefront (product pages, collections, cart) but keeps Shopify's checkout, payments, order management, and admin exactly as they are. You get full Shopify admin control with a custom front-end.
In practice, a well-built Hydrogen storefront achieves LCP under 1.5s and 95+ PageSpeed on mobile — compared to a typical Liquid theme at 60–75. The gap is largest on mobile with slower connections, which is where most e-commerce conversions are lost.
